Cancer survivors gather for ice cream and joy

BY JANET C. WETZEL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MIDDLETOWN — doctors who usually spend their time treating cancer patients will be dishing out a different kind of treatment Sunday.

Oncologists will be the servers at the third annual Celebration of Life ice cream social at 2-3:30 p.m. in the Middletown Regional Hospital's Cancer Survivors' Garden.

Hundreds of Tristate residents are expected to attend the event, which is free and open to Greater Middletown cancer survivors, their families, friends and others who have been touched by the disease, said Janine Smith, hospital communications coordinator.

“It's always a fun day,” Ms. Smith said. “We always have such a great turnout because the community is very supportive in making this successful each year. This has become a

Middletown tradition to honor area cancer survivors who serve as living symbols of hope and progress.”

There will be strawberry, chocolate and vanilla ice cream; cookies; lemonade; and coffee. And because the tables and chairs are under a large tent, the party goes on regardless of the weather.

Inspirational speaker Sherry Weathers, co-founder of the Greater Cincinnati Wellness Community, will be featured.

Ms. Weathers, a 12-year-survivor of breast cancer was among five Wellness Community founders, and has been the outreach and marketing director since it opened in November 1990. The nonprofit organization brings cancer patients, their families and friends free psychological and social support services designed to nurture hope; and to help people regain control of their lives after learning they have cancer.

Through an affiliation with HealthWise — Middletown Regional Hospital's center for health promotion, education and screenings — the hospital is able to bring the services of the Wellness Community to Butler, Warren and southern Montgomery counties, said Doug McNeill, hospital president and CEO.

Those services are offered at HealthWise at the Conover Health Center, Conover Drive, Franklin.
