Wyoming celebrates 125 years

Jazz show, parades among festivities

BY MARIE McCAIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

WYOMING — Turning 125 means there is one party after another in the city of Wyoming.

Chartered on March 23, 1874, Wyoming was a small unnamed town before Robert Reily, a silk merchant who earned his fortune in Cincinnati, inspired residents to get together and give their little community a name.

In celebration, city officials and residents have planned event after event throughout the year.

Earlier this month, officials dedicated a fountain in Centennial Park on Springfield Pike, and on Thursday, the Woody Evans Trio performed a free Jazz concert at Village Green Park, Wyoming and Oak avenues, attracting a number of music lovers in spite the threat of rain.

The next event is set for the July 4 weekend, according to Terry Seiber, Wyoming's community and civic activities coordinator.

Since July 4 is on a Sunday, the annual parade, will be e Saturday, she said.

Floats for the 10 a.m. event will be prepared by competing neighborhood groups, she said. Judges will announce a winner following the parade.

In September, the city will hold a festival with an historic homes tour and in October there will be another parade ,in conjunction with homecoming events, along with puppet shows for children and a Civil War re-enactment.

For more information about July 4 celebrations or Wyoming's other birthday happenings call 821-5423.
