Camper fire delays I-75 traffic
BY SUSAN VELA
The Cincinnati Enquirer
FORT WRIGHT The combination of Sunday's heat and too much hydraulic fluid spilled on an engine probably caused a fire that destroyed a camper Sunday evening on Interstate 75, said Sgt. Dean Russell of the Fort Wright Police Department.
No one was hurt, although traffic in the southbound lanes was backed up for at least 90 minutes, extending all the way to Covington, he said.
Frank Brendel, 62, of North Canton, Ohio, was driving on a part of I-75 that is under construction south of the Kyles Lane exit when the fire began around 5 p.m.
Mr. Brendel had three grandchildren with him. He immediately pulled to the side of the lane, but the fire already was out of control, Sgt. Russell said.
It was a total loss, he said, estimating damage at about $150,000.
Mr. Brendel told police that he had replaced a hydraulic hose Saturday night after noticing that his old one had a break.
Sgt. Russell said Sunday's heat may have caused the remnants of hydraulic fluid spilled on the engine to spark and cause Sunday's fire.
The fire spread quickly, he said.
Mr. Brendel and his grandchildren were to spend Sunday night with relatives in Cincinnati.
