Rainfall isn't too far off normal

Front could cool, dry muggy air

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Nostradamus predicted a great drought in 1999. But the 16th-century French prognosticator must not have been referring to Cincinnati.

While rainfall is 1 inch below normal so far this month, recent storms and cloudy skies predicted for this week promise to boost precipitation numbers, National Weather Service Meteorologist Al Randall said.

The normal June rainfall is 3.32 inches. (AccuWeather reports a norm of 3.45 inches.) Between midnight and 5 p.m. Sunday, .62 inch of rain had fallen at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. That was in addition to the .17 inch that fell Saturday and the .54 inch on Thursday.

That meant a total of 1.33 inches for the week, pushing this month's total rainfall to 2.84 inches or about a half-inch below normal.

For the year, Cincinnati is about 3.5 inches below the normal of 20.9 inches, Mr. Randall added.

The lag hasn't resulted in any major water usage problems, he said. Columbus, where rainfall is about 3 inches below normal for the year is suffering some drought-like conditions.

In Cincinnati, there's a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight, Mr. Randall said. A front from the Mississippi River Valley could cool and dry off the muggy air that has clung to Cincinnati in recent days like wet jeans.

Susan Vela contributed to this report.
