Chemical spill closes Miami hall
BY JANICE MORSE
The Cincinnati Enquirer
OXFORD A potentially hazardous chemical spill forced the evacuation of a building on the Miami University campus Tuesday afternoon.
Hughes Hall a tall, stately brick building that houses chemistry laboratories was cleared shortly after the campus' Public Safety Department learned that a substance had been spilled, said Cathryn House, chief of police and di rector of public safety. That notification came around 12:30 p.m.
The building remained closed for the rest of the afternoon as hazardous-materials teams from Hamilton and Middletown worked on the scene.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, officials were unable to say what the substance was, nor did they know how much was spilled or how the spill happened. However, they said the spill had been contained and was being cleaned up. They also said the building, at High Street and Patterson Avenue, was expected to be reopened by late evening Tuesday.
A faculty member and two students who were in the immediate area of the spill were taken to the campus health center as a precaution, Ms. House said.
No information on their condition was immediately available, but Ms. House said she thought they weren't experiencing any ill effects from the spill.
Claire Wagner, a university spokeswoman, was unable to say how many people were evacuated from the building, but said there weren't many people inside because summer sessions are less well-attended than classes during the regular academic year.
However, the campus was full of visitors for freshman orientation.
