Striking drivers accused of assault
BY DAN HORN
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Two striking truck drivers were indicted Tuesday on charges of assaulting a man who was on his way to visit his daughter at Children's Hospital Medical Center.
James Matheson, 64, of Fort Wright and John Stockman, 47, of Milan, Ind., face two counts each of felonious assault. If convicted, each man could be sentenced to a maximum of 16 years in prison.
Prosecutors say the incident occurred earlier this month when Steven Callen drove past the picket line for Teamsters Local 100, which is striking Hilltop Basic Resources Inc. The Teamsters were picketing the entrance to a construction site at the hospital.
As Mr. Callen drove past, prosecutors say, he and Mr. Stockman had a verbal confrontation that escalated to a fistfight.
During the fight, they say, Mr. Matheson struck Mr. Callen in the head with a piece of concrete.
Prosecutors say Mr. Stockman punched Mr. Callen several times, struck him in the head with his knee and bit him on the neck.
They say Mr. Callen suffered blurred vision and bleeding around his brain as a result of the fight.
An employee of Hilltop taped some of the confrontation and played it recently in court during a dispute between the Teamsters and the company over conduct on the picket lines.
