Thousands expected at Colerain's July 4 bash

BY LEW MOORES
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP — They've added a children's area and a car show, turned the stage around, and are again having entertainment and fireworks for this year's “Fourth of July Spectacular.”

Organizers of the one-day event expect attendance to be so heavy that part of Springdale Road will be closed and 15 buses will ferry people from nearby parking lots.

The township was so buoyed by last year's fireworks show and simultaneous dedication of its new government complex building on Springdale Road, that it was continued this year.

Thomas Hart, a former trustee and chairman of the event, said about 15,000 viewed the fireworks last year and 7,000 to 8,000 were on hand for the entertainment.

“We think we'll pick up 25,000 to 30,000 (this year),” said Mr. Hart. “It was well-re ceived last year. We were amazed at the number of people up and down Springdale (Road) and at Northgate Mall. We ought to do it again. So we thought we'd give it a whirl.”

The free event lasts all day Sunday, with a 5K road race at 9 a.m., the car show beginning at noon, then entertainment, followed by fireworks at 10 p.m.

The Drifters will perform from 6 to 7 p.m., and Gary Lewis and the Playboys will perform from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event's sponsors include the Fiorini Agency, Cinergy, Rumpke and WGRR-FM (103.5).

The fireworks show is expected to last a half-hour. Springdale Road, between Flattop Drive and Colerain Park, will be closed at 5:30 p.m. Mr. Hart said parking for 10,000 to 15,000 cars will be available at Colerain Park, Colerain Elementary School, Colerain High School and Northgate Mall.
