Wilder tries to fund fire update
Cameras would locate victims
BY AMY CAPPIELLO

WILDER The Wilder Volunteer Fire Department has raised nearly one-third of the money needed to update its firefighting technology.
The department has raised between $6,000 and $7,000 to buy a thermal imaging camera, said Lt. David Geiger. The cameras, which help identify victims in smoke-filled rooms, generally cost between $18,000 and $25,000, he said.
Besides the trucks themselves, it's one of the most pricey things you can buy, Lt. Geiger said.
The cameras use technology adapted from military intelligence to assign shades of gray to certain heat levels. Cooler items are dark, while hotter ones are light. Extremely hot fires show up white on the firefighter's screen.
The decision to buy the thermal imaging camera was not influenced by any problems the department had in the past.
It's pre-emptive, Lt. Geiger said. We're trying to stay current with the technological advances in firefighting.
Funds have been raised pri marily through donations from citizens, businesses and community organizations. Lt. Geiger said he expected the fund-raising, which started this spring, would be finished within a year.
Donations for the thermal imaging camera can be made to the Wilder Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Fund Raiser, 402 Licking Pike, Wilder KY 41071.
