Passers-by help save driver of fruit truck on AA Highway

BY WILLIAM A. WEATHERS
The Cincinnati Enquirer

ALEXANDRIA — Passers-by were credited with helping to save the driver of a truck that crashed on the AA Highway near here. Campbell County Police Patrolman Steve Ellison said the unidentified truck driver was driving south on the AA Highway, a mile south of Alexandria, about 6:45 p.m. when he apparently had a seizure and lost control of his box-type delivery truck.

The truck, which was carrying fruit, crossed the median and the northbound lanes and went down an embankment.

The impact crushed the truck's cab, trapping the driver, Patrolman Ellison said. Quick action by passers-by, who used fire extinguishers to smother smoke in the engine compartment, probably helped save the driver's life, he said.

Using the Jaws of Life and other equipment, Alexandria firefighters needed at least 30 minutes to free the driver. “The door was basically wrapped around his leg,” said Alexandria Assistant Fire Chief Mark Rauch.

The driver, who never lost consciousness, was transported by Air Care helicopter to University Hospital, where he was being treated late Tuesday.

Northbound AA Highway traffic was blocked for about an hour because of the crash.
