Death of baby wrapped in plastic ruled accidental
BY JANICE MORSE
The Cincinnati Enquirer
HAMILTON The death of an infant who was found with plastic around his head has been ruled accidental.
George William Bowling III, 5 months old, died June 12 at his home in the 500 block of Ross Avenue.
Butler County Coroner Dr. Richard P. Burkhardt ruled that the baby died from lack of oxygen to the brain, due to suffocation with plastic sheeting, a coroner's employee said Wednesday.
The child was entangled in plastic sheeting discarded on floor, the coroner's report says.
Officials previously said the baby's mother told them the child had apparently rolled off the couch and became entangled in the plastic, which an other child had apparently left on the floor.
Dr. Burkhardt was unavailable for comment Wednesday, an employee said.
The county Children Services Board (CSB) removed two other children from the home while awaiting the results of the death investigation. A judge granted temporary custody of those children, ages 2 and 4, to their paternal grand parents.
CSB spokeswoman Linda Lee Smith was unable to immediately determine what action the agency will take in the aftermath of the ruling. Officials said the home where the children lived was unsafe and unsanitary.
Hamilton police did not say whether they were closing the case or taking additional action.
