MIDDLETOWN A Trenton man died Wednesday, 12 days after he was shot through the chin while driving on a city street, and police still have no suspects or clues in the shooting.
Brian Duff, 27, of Sal Boulevard, died about 3 p.m. at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, where he had been since Middletown Police found him lying near his car about 12:30 a.m. June 25.
Police said he had been driving near Baltimore Street and Woodlawn Avenue when he was shot. The bullet struck his chin, then traveled down into his chest, police said. Mr. Duff crashed into a utility pole in the 1400 block of Woodlawn.
Police talked to numerous people in the area, but could not determine who shot Mr. Duff.
So far it's just a mystery. There's not a whole lot to go on, Police Chief Bill Becker said late Wednesday. To my knowledge we have no suspects at this time. We have no motive. We haven't been able to uncover anything about an argument or a fight that might have led up to this.
Miami Valley Hospital would not confirm Mr. Duff's death, but referred inquires to the family.
A woman answering the telephone at the Duff residence in Trenton referred questions to Mr. Duff's uncle, Greg Duff, who could not be reached for comment.
From the time of the shooting he was in pretty bad condition. I don't think he ever regained consciousness, the chief said.
Earlier Mr. Duff's mother, Sue, said her son had friends in the area of the shooting, but she did not know whether he had been there visiting that day.
She said her son was a self-employed construction worker, and the family knew of no enemies.
Anyone with information about the shooting should contact Middletown Police at 425-7700.
