Man injured in hit-run; driver faces charges

BY JANICE MORSE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON — A 52-year-old hit-and-run victim was in serious condition Wednesday at University Hospital.

James R. Rye suffered injuries to his head, lungs and abdomen, and had a broken hip. A car struck Mr. Rye as he jogged across B Street near his home on Saturday night, said Officer Don Taylor, Hamilton police spokesman.

Officer Taylor said a light blue 1984 Cadillac Seville was southbound on Millikin Road about 9:40 p.m. Saturday when it turned north onto B Street and struck Mr. Rye. The car was traveling at about the posted speed limit of 35 mph, Officer Taylor said, when it struck Mr. Rye and catapulted him about 30 feet.

Mr. Rye was not in a crosswalk.

About an hour after the crash, a man identified as Derico Slaughter, 27, of Hamilton, walked into police headquarters and told officers he was the driver who had struck Mr. Rye, Officer Taylor said.

Mr. Slaughter was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, but Hamilton Municipal Court on Wednesday said his court date had not been set.

Officer Taylor said Mr. Slaughter could face additional charges.
