Warren property taxes due in 13 days

BY SAUNDRA AMRHEIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LEBANON — Tax day is T-minus 13 days. Warren County residents have until July 21 to pay the second half of their 1998 property tax bill at the county treasurer's office or area banks.

Those who pay up to 10 days after the due date will get slapped with a 5 percent penalty.

Property owners making payments after Aug. 1 will be charged a 10 percent penalty, said County Treasurer Jim LeFevers.

If residents have not received a bill, they need to call his office at (513) 695-1300, Mr. LeFevers added.

Most wait until the last minute.

“A lot of people are going to hang onto that money until they have to part with it,” Mr. LeFevers said.

Procrastinators coupled with the county's growth add to the strain on his staff.

There are 64,000 parcels of land taxed in Warren County, about 40,000 more than 10 years ago, Mr. Le Fevers said. Up to $112 million will be collected for tax year 1998.

The dollar amount climbs 10 percent to 13 percent every year, he said.

His office anticipates the rush by staying open 8:30 a.m. to noon every Saturday from late June until the due date. Regular office hours run 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The treasurer's office sits in the County Administration Building, 320 E. Silver St., Lebanon.

When bills came due for the first half of 1998 on Feb. 22 this year, his four deputies and part-time worker processed $1.1 million in over-the-counter payments and $3.3 million in mail payments in one day.

The five workers come just as prepared this time around.

“We got hand letter-openers and a hand "Paid' stamp and good Monroe calculators,” Mr. LeFevers said. “This was a great job.”

        headBANKS TAKING PAYMENTS

The following banks will take Warren County property tax payments until July 21:

        • 1st National Bank, all Warren County locations.

        • Lebanon Citizens National Bank, all Warren County locations.

        • Fifth Third Bank, all Warren County locations.

        • Community National Bank, all locations.

        • 1st National Bank of Germantown, Carlisle branch.

        • Huntington National Bank, Springboro and Franklin branches.

        • Peoples Building Loan & Savings, Mason.
