Candidate calls for federal probe of shooting

Alicia Reece, a candidate for Cincinnati city council, announced Thursday that she is sending a letter to U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno asking for a Justice Department investigation into the shooting of a Cincinnati motorist.
Cincinnati police shot 30-year-old Michael Carpenter to death in March during a traffic stop in Northside.
Ms. Reece, unsatisfied with reviews that cleared the officers involved, as well as a city investigation that called for one officer to be disciplined, is asking for an independent federal investigation to promote “safety and fairness.”
The last time the city called in a federal mediator after a police shooting was after the 1997 death of Lorenzo Collins.
Officers shot Mr. Collins, an escaped mental patient, after he charged at officers while waving a brick.
His death prompted community unrest and was the reason the city formed a civilian review board this year to investigate complaints against police.
