Children's, Good Sam on best-hospitals list

BY TIM BONFIELD
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Children's Hospital Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital made an annual list of “America's Best Hospitals” compiled by U.S. News and World Report. But University Hospital, which had been included in past years, missed the list for the second year in a row.

Children's Hospital was ranked eighth nationwide in pediatrics. Good Samaritan was ranked 37th in cardiology and 47th in urology.

In 1997, University Hospital was ranked among the top hospitals in 10 categories. But it dropped off the list in 1998 because officials failed to complete a required survey. This time, the hospital turned in the information but still didn't make the list.

“We're extremely surprised,” said hospital spokeswoman Amy Bomar. “We don't know why we didn't make it.”

The magazine's July 19th edition (which hits newsstands July 12) lists top hospitals in 16 categories. The rankings are based on the hospitals' reputation among doctors, death rates, nursing ratios, level of technology and other factors.

Elsewhere in Ohio, the Cleveland Clinic was ranked fourth nationwide in an overall measure of quality and tops in the nation for cardiology. University Hospitals of Cleveland and the Ohio State University Medical Center also were ranked in several categories.
