Norwood ready to flaunt itself with summer bash

BY WALT SCHAEFER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NORWOOD — Up to 4,000 spectators are expected to line Montgomery Road on July 27 for the annual Norwood Day Parade.

On July 28, 1,200 are expected at Norwood Day at Coney Island, as Hamilton County's second-largest community celebrates summer.

“The theme of this year's parade is "Norwood: Moving in New Directions,'” said Kathy Walters of the Norwood Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the parade.

“We have a lot to celebrate in Norwood this year,” Mayor Joe Hochbein said. “We have exciting new retail growth and new business growth and historic housing stock being revitalized — all of those things.

“We are putting together a new city brochure letting people know that Norwood is a great place to live, work and shop,” the mayor said.

The parade is expected to have more than 100 entries, including marching bands, oth er musical units and decorated floats, officials said.

Grand marshal of this year's parade is David Main, president of the Norwood-based Hamilton County Development Co.

Jane Grote, spokeswoman for the Norwood Business and Professional Women's Club, said the group has sponsored Norwood Day at Coney Island for its 65-year history.

Proceeds from the event are used to fund the club's charitable efforts, including college scholarships, donations to the Norwood Food Closet, schools, youth activities and other needs.

The $11 admission includes swimming, water slides, rides, soft drinks, miniature golf, basketball, sand volleyball and pedal boats.

Registration for the baby show is 10 to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $4. Bingo will run from 1 to 5 p.m.; horseshoes from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m.

There will be no special bus service to the event this year. Those attending need not live in Norwood.
