Montgomery stormed for Bastille Day

Event notes sister city

BY WALT SCHAEFER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MONTGOMERY — The city's annual Bastille Day celebration Saturday will feature 3- to 6-year-olds on Big Wheels competing in LePetit Tour De Montgomery, a display of historic Montgomery pictures and a wide selection of fare from area restaurants.

IF YOU GO
  What: Bastille Day

When: noon to 11 p.m. Saturday
Where: Downtown Montgomery on Montgomery Road
Highlights: Food from 11 restaurants, music throughout the day; Cincinnati Zoo animals 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; LePetit Tour de Montgomery toddler Big Wheel race, 1 p.m.
  Information: 891-2424
Admission: Free, open to the public.

Montgomery Road in the city's downtown district will be blocked for the noon to 11 p.m. celebration, which recognizes Montgomery's sister city ties to Neuilly-Plaisance, France, a Paris suburb of 18,000 residents on the Marnes River.

“We view this event as a community activity to build unity and provide entertainment while adding the French flavor to honor our sister city,” said Bastille Day spokeswoman Carolyn Kite.

“All of the restaurants keep proceeds and the city provides staff and workers and many, many people volunteer time and talents,” Ms. Kite said.

“If any profit remains, it goes to the Montgomery Sister City Commission to sponsor exchanges with Neuilly-Plaisance. We have had senior citizen and middle and junior high school student exchanges, soccer exchanges and craft and trade exchanges,” she said.

Entertainment includes the Sycamore Community Band, jazz musicians, swing music from Rich Uncle Skeleton, salsa by Latin Xposure, and H-Bomb Ferguson performing the blues. Children will be entertained by Cincinnati Zoo animals and a variety of games and activities.

The historic photographs of the city will be displayed by the Montgomery Historical Society at the Universalist Church.

Restaurants providing fare for the day are Germano's, Gourmet Bazaar, Donato's Pizza, the Lazy Gourmet, Montgomery Inn, Pablino's, Marilyn's Treats, Perkins, Pacific Moon Cafe, Tandoor Restaurant and Watson Bros. Brewhouse.

“This is the largest community event of the year here,” said Assistant City Manager Christi Gall. “It brings everyone together in building community spirit. Everyone is invited.”
