Three seats open on school board

Middletown awaits 'new blood'

MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown/Monroe Board of Education will get at least two new members in November's general election.

Board President Tom Brickey and member A.C. Mitchell have decided not to seek re-election. Katie McNeil's term also expires at the end of the year, but she has taken out petitions to run for re-election.

Whoever is elected will join board members Carol Brotherton and Dr. Mark Frazer. Their terms expire at the end of 2001.

“There's a time to come and a time to depart. It's my time to depart,” said Mr. Brickey, who was first elected to the board in 1991 and is serving his second consecutive year as its president. “I don't feel I should make a career out of this.”

Of his tenure on the board, Mr. Brickey said he is most proud “that the board has always placed the needs of our young people as our highest priority.”

He said he was pleased that so many people have taken out petitions for the three open seats.

“I'd like to see more people come out,” he said. “There's lots of leadership out in our community. This board needs a continuous infusion of leadership. Nothing stands still and it shouldn't. It's time for new blood.”

Besides Mrs. McNeil, four others have taken out nominating petitions for board seats. They are:

        • Suzi Rubin of Monroe, a founding member of the Committee on Reviewing Education, a group that is trying to form a separate Monroe School District. Mrs. Rubin said she would not file her petitions if the state school board reverses its 1997 decision that denied her group's petition.

        • Chiropractor Dr. Mark McClure of Middletown. He is the only person who had filed petitions as of Wednesday.)

        • John Venturella, Middletown, a partner in Clark, Schaefer, Hackett & Co., and a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Mid-Miami Valley Chamber of Commerce.

        • Sara Brown of Middletown.

Petitions have to be filed with the Butler County Board of Elections by Aug. 19.
