Butler airport may get new name
County leaders want regional tack

HAMILTON To reflect a new, regional approach to financing Hamilton-Fairfield Airport operations, Butler County officials want to change the facility's name to the Butler County Regional Airport.
All three county commissioners voted for the name-change recommendation Thursday. The change would require the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration.
The recommendation comes two weeks before Butler County and Hamilton will meet with the city of Fairfield, and the townships of Union, Fairfield and Liberty to discuss the possibility of those communities joining a partnership that finances and oversees airport operations.
The partnership now consists of only Butler County and Hamilton. Fairfield withdrew from it last year, complaining about the high cost of participating and the makeup of the Butler County Airport Authority, the facility's governing body.
The commissioners said they talked with Hamilton and Fairfield officials about renaming the airport and no one objected.
I just don't want the name to become a point of contention, Commissioner Courtney Combs said before the vote.
Commissioner Chuck Furmon proposed the name change.
I think it's appropriate based on our feeling that it should be a regional airport, he said.
The airport made $10 million in improvements last year and has grown in importance as a tool for luring businesses to Butler County.
Any new partners will have to contribute to the purchase of a glide-slope device, which is a radio signal that assists approaching airplanes descend at an appropriate angle. The cost is $300,000 to $600,000.
The airport also needs a new terminal. Two double-wide trailers now serve as a temporary terminal.
