Bush gains in Ohio GOP delegation
BY PAUL BARTON
Enquirer Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON The majority of Republicans in the Ohio congressional delegation came together Friday to endorse George W. Bush for president, but noticeably missing were the state's two GOP senators.
Nine of the 11 Republican House members from Ohio said they were ready to join the Bush team.
I think George Bush can unify America the same way he has united the Republican Party, said Rep. John Boehner, R-West Chester.
We know him, added Rep. Rob Portman, R-Terrace Park. We believe his vision of compassionate conservatism is something ... that makes sense for the people we represent.
One who didn't join in the endorsement was Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Cincinnati.
Chabot spokesman Gary Lindgren said: He (Mr. Chabot) likes George Bush. He thinks he would make a great president. He also thinks there are a lot of other good people running for the nomination.
Joining Mr. Boehner and Mr. Portman in endorsing Mr. Bush were Republican Reps. Ralph Regula of Navarre, Michael Oxley of Findlay, Deborah Pryce of Columbus, David Hobson of Springfield, Robert Ney of St. Clairsville and Steven LaTourette of Madison.
Rep. John Kasich of Westervilleaborted his own presidential campaign earlier this week to support Mr. Bush.
But Republican Sens. Mike DeWine and George Voinovich did not appear.
He just isn't ready to endorse anyone yet, Voinovich spokesman Mike Dawson said.
DeWine spokesman Charlie Boesel said Mr. DeWine hasn't decided whom he is going to support now that Mr. Kasich has dropped out.
Also missing was Rep. Paul Gillmor, R-Old Fort, who said it was too early to make an endorsement.
