Bad air likely to linger for the week

BY ERIN GIBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The fifth smog alert in as many days is the result of Hamilton County's continued hot and humid weather today.

The longest streak of alerts this year lasted eight days, June 6-13.

Sarah Brugger, spokeswoman for the Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services, said muggy weather likely would keep smog alerts running throughout this week.

The department will continue the alerts one day at a time, though, because fronts could touch the county beginning Wednesday.

“Some meteorologists have predicted scattered rain, but what we really need is rain everywhere,” Ms. Brugger said.

Today's AccuWeather forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with a high of 89. There's a 40 percent chance of rain in the morning, according to the National Weather Service.

A 30 percent chance of rain will continue into Wednesday, when the high will be near 90. Thursday should be partly cloudy with a high near 90, and temperatures should top 90 on Friday and Saturday. During smog alerts, the Regional Ozone Coalition asks people to reduce driving or use public transportation and to avoid refueling during the day. This reduces pollutants that sunlight cooks into smog.

Residents should postpone using gas-powered lawn tools until after 6 p.m.
