Parking at airport may get easier
1,800 more long-term spaces in the offing

HEBRON For the first time, the number of passengers boarding planes at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport in one month exceeded 1 million, the Kenton County Airport Board announced Monday night.
It happened in June, when 1,019,060 passengers flew out of the airport.
But growth has a price.
On Monday the board awarded a $1.9 million contract to the Nelson-Stark Co. Commercial Plumbing and Excavating for an expansion of the airport's long-term parking lot.
The work to add 1,800 spaces is scheduled to begin in August and will take three months, said Bill Martin, director of planning and development for the airport.
The lot, on the north side of the airport along Interstate 275, has about 4,200 spaces. More are needed to accommodate passenger and employee growth, Mr. Martin said.
When the expansion is completed, more parking will be available in the Terminal 2 parking garage, where some employees park.
The airport board also is studying ways to increase parking in the terminal garages. There are about 4,000 spaces available.
Construction of another multideck garage east of the Terminal 3 garage, used mostly by Delta Air Line passengers, is a possibility.
Also Monday, airport Director of Aviation Bob Holscher said officials plan to meet with representatives of a New York-based start-up airline about beginning service to Cincinnati.
Jet Blue plans to serve about 50 cities, Mr. Holscher said. It was started by former executives and employees of Peoples Express and Morris Air, a regional airline recently purchased by Southwest Airlines.
