ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP A Butler County man was critically injured Tuesday in a collision with a train on Trenton Road in St. Clair Township.
Police said the driver of a Ford Escort was going west on Trenton Road when he drove around several cars and the railroad crossing safety gate and into a passing train.
The bars were down and the lights were working properly, said Butler County Sheriff's Department spokesman Brad Kraemer. He was about 1,000 feet from the train and then accelerated into the train.
The name of the 25-year-old was not released, pending notification of relatives, Mr. Kraemer said. He was alone in the car, and is in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital.
The crash remains under investigation, and a final report is expected by the end of the week, Mr. Kraemer said.
Butler County and railroad police officers have cracked down on railroad trespassing and driving around safety bars in recent months. About three weeks ago, police in Hamilton cited 13 people for walking on railroad tracks or driving around gates. In February, more than 80 people were cited during a similar operation.
The sweeps followed a rise in railroad fatalities among pedestrians. Last year, eight people died after being struck by trains in Butler County, and six peopled died in Hamilton County.
