Franklin nets new employer, 101 jobs

Firm makes diesel engines

FRANKLIN — City officials are expected to announce Thursday that a plant to build diesel engines for military and other trucks will be built on a 20-acre site in the city near Interstate 75.

The plant will employ at least 100 within the next four years. The plant for AM General Corp., parent of the Humvee Corp., will be in Schumacher Commerce Park off Ohio 123 at the interchange with I-75, Mayor James Mears said.

With equipment, the investment could reach $12 million, he said.

Construction should begin immediately and it could be operating within seven months, Mr. Mears said. Though only 10 workers will be hired this year, employment will jump to 43 in 2000, and to 88 by 2001, with a payroll then of $3 million.

There should be 101 workers by 2002. The plant payroll should eventually top $6 million, officials said.

The city, which competed with Springboro, Fairborn and other areas for the plant, offered a 10-year tax abatement on the building and a 75 percent tax abatement on contents, also for 10 years.

“It is tied to the dollars that they're going to bring to us,” Mr. Mears said, adding that the incentives are not contingent on the number of jobs. “I'm especially proud of the staff of the city of Franklin.”

On Monday, council agreed to waive the entire building permit, water and sewer tap-in fees for the proposed project. It did not waive the plumbing and sewer utilization fees.

“It's very nice when you can bring over 100 jobs, with the potential of going to 160,” he said. “It's a well-known company and it's one that you would like to have.”

He said local, county and state officials moved quickly on the project, meeting about three weeks ago.

“If we can bring in a $12 million deal and it sits in our city, 10 years down the road it gets to be big time,” he said. “We'll both grow together.”
