AKRON — The nearly $200,000 spent to defend a killer who wanted to be executed was a bargain, the attorney for the first man to be put to death in Ohio in 36 years said Tuesday.
“The figures are extremely low when you consider this was nine years of effort,” said David H. Bodiker, Ohio's chief public defender.
The $198,873 his office spent to oppose the death penalty sought by Wilford Lee Berry Jr. was in addition to the $200,000 to $400,000 the Ohio attorney general's office estimates it spent to make sure the execution was carried out.
Mr. Berry, convicted in the 1989 murder-robbery of Cleveland baker Charles Mitroff, was executed Feb. 19.
William Florio, a private detective hired by Mr. Mitroff's family, said the amount of money spent defending Mr. Berry, known as “The Volunteer,” was outrageous.
