WCPO-TV reliving its 50 years

        Uncle Al, Paul Dixon and Nick Clooney return to the airwaves starting next week as WCPO-TV (Channel 9) celebrates its 50th birthday with:

        • Reruns of the Uncle Al Show.The children's program, hosted for 35 years by Al and Wanda Lewis, will air at 10:30 a.m. Saturdays from July 31 through Christmas.

        • Two rare 1950s Paul Dixon Shows.Broadcast more than a decade before the familiar color repeats on WLWT (Channel 5), will air 5 p.m. Aug. 1 and 1 p.m. Sept. 12.

        Mr. Dixon, whose zany comedy inspired David Letterman, was a popular WCPO-AM disc jockey before starring on the sister TV station in 1950. Some of his shows were broadcast nationally from WCPO-TV by ABC and the old DuMont network in 1951-55.

        • Two episodes of The Nick Clooney Show. The live 1969 daytime variety show, will air at 5 p.m. Aug. 15 and 3 p.m. Aug. 22.

        • Channel 9 also premieres Mr. Clooney's interviews with station founder Mort Watters and long-time news anchor Al Schottelkotte, producer Len Goorian and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis at 3 p.m. Sept. 19. The conversations were taped at WCET-TV in the early 1990s to preserve local broadcasting history.

        • Cincinnati History.The six-part 1981 series narrated by Charles Kuralt will air at 7:30 p.m. Saturday July 31 through Sept. 4. It covers 1788 to 1960.

        • Two new birthday specials: 50 Years of Cincinnati Television News,7 p.m. Sept. 5, before the Riverfest fireworks telecast; and a 50th Anniversary Special at 5 p.m. Oct. 3.

        • Four Emmy-winning Jim Friedman specials also will repeat: Just Passin' Thru at 2 p.m. Sept. 5; Class of '69, at 2 p.m. Sept. 11; River Story at 2 p.m. Sept. 18; and First Day at 2 p.m. Sept. 26.
