Urban League of Cincinnati in line for $500,000 grant

BY ALLEN HOWARD
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Urban League of Greater Cincinnati is among 13 finalists in a nationwide competition for a $500,000 Lilly endowment grant.

Rebecca Kelley, the league's development director, said the selection was based on its proposal to use the grant to target five strategic areas:

        • Working with schools to promote quality education.

        • Ongoing and supportive interactions with parents, family members and other adults.

        • Constructive nonschool activities, such as civic, social and employment events.

        • Safe and supportive school environments.

        • Access to good health care.

The programs are part of the National Campaign for Achievement initiative started by the National Urban League, Mrs. Kelley said.

She said the campaign is design to foster positive attitudes about academic achievement, specifically among African-American children.

It is designed to operate with campaign partners among major corporations, foundations, churches, social and fraternal organizations working with communities.

They will focus on student learning, a higher proportion of qualified teachers, increased enrollment in rigorous courses and increased access to and involvement in youth development programs, she said.

“In short, the campaign for achievement will create a "new village' and raise the achievement levels of children and prepare them to meet the demands of the 21st century,” she said.

Sheila J. Adams, president and chief executive officer of the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati, said corporate and community partners have been a part of the league's 50-year legacy of service.

Winners will be announced in September.

The Lilly Endowment, based in Indianapolis, is committing $25 million over five years to support the Campaign for Achievement, which is the largest foundation the National Urban League has ever received.

The Lilly grant also will be used to for college scholarships for graduates of the Thurgood Marshall Achievers Society, as well as support for the Congress of National Black Churches.
