HAMILTON Firefighters are investigating two fires that hit an office building early Thursday.
Fire officials say that separate fires were set about the same time in an office building on North D Street. The blazes did about $30,000 damage to the white two-story building, but there were no injuries.
There were two separate small fires, said Hamilton Fire Chief Lyle Moore. The separate fires would do it (make it suspect). A police offer on patrol spotted a fire shortly before 1 a.m., started by lighted papers and magazines, the chief said. Upon arrival, fire crews found another blaze. The investiga tion into the fires is being handled by the department, and there were no leads as of Thursday afternoon.
Dennis Owens, the building's owner, was on vacation but was notified of the incident.
(Arson) is a problem all over the place, Chief Moore said. A lot of it is juvenile-driven. Probably our largest percentage is done by juveniles.
To combat arson and a child's innate curiosity about fire, the department conducts a juvenile fire-setters educational program, the chief said. The program, targeting ages 7-16, explores the dangers of playing with fire, especially when using it to vandalize.
