Kiddie porn suspect linked to N.Ky.

Cops say victim brought here

BY AMY CAPPIELLO
The Cincinnati Enquirer

INDEPENDENCE — Investigators have arrested an Albuquerque, N.M., man in connection with a child pornography ring with ties to Northern Kentucky.

Albuquerque police arrested Tyrone Rust, 36, on Friday and charged him with use of a child in a sexual performance. If convicted of the felony charge, Mr. Rust faces 10 to 20 years in prison.

Independence Lt. Shawn Butler said Mr. Rust came to Northern Kentucky with his victim sometime in 1998. The charges stem from what allegedly took place then at a house in Elsmere owned by Thomas Meyer, the first man arrested in the alleged ring.

Albuquerque police are looking into similar acts that took place there.

Federal agents and Albuquerque police officers searched Mr. Rust's home and seized photos, movies and a computer, Albuquerque Detective Don Robberts said. He said the items were still being examined and were not all necessarily pornographic in nature.

Mr. Rust is being held in the Bernalillo County Detention Center in Albuquerque. He first became a suspect in May after Independence police arrested Mr. Meyer, 50, of Turkeyfoot Road and charged him with felony use of a child in a sexual performance. Police searched the residence and removed a computer, more than 200 disks, 36 videotapes and a bag of diapers.

Information Mr. Meyer provided led to the arrest of Walnut Hills resident Walter Bertsche. A search of his Collins Avenue home revealed more pictures of children and adults in sexually explicit poses. Mr. Bertsche has also been charged with felony use of a child in a sexual performance.

Independence police, who are still waiting to hear whether Mr. Rust will fight extradition to Ken tucky, are now turning their attention to a fourth man who is possibly living in Iowa. He might be the last of the suspects thought to have committed acts in Independence, Lt. Butler said. Local investigators think that the ring may be bigger, but that other alleged incidents did not occur here.

“Things just keep developing,” Lt. Butler said.

        Jane Prendergast contributed.
