Many cool centers empty
BY EARNEST WINSTON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
People who could benefit the most from Cincinnati's 28 cool centers are nowhere to be found.
Some of the older folks are not really using it, Jess Parrett, the city's recreation commission spokesman, said Thursday of the nearly-empty cool centers. We think they're the ones probably the most at risk. We cannot seem to get the word out to folks to use the cool centers. We have not had the response that you would expect.
The cool centers, at the Cincinnati Recreation Commis sion's community centers, usually have a TV and pool tables. They offer chairs, couches and drinks to visitors.
The cool centers in Over-the-Rhine and Hartwell community centers report good attendance particularly among youths and seniors. In Hartwell, seniors usually stop by for a break as they walk to a nearby supermarket, the staff said.
For center addresses and hours, residents can call the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, 352-4001. The city offers van service to the centers andinformation on free fans and air conditioners on its 24-hour hot line, at 591-6000.
