Fairfield firefighter runs for seat, may lose job

BY SUE KIESEWETTER

FAIRFIELD — A part-time Fairfield firefighter may lose his job if he continues in his bid for a seat on the Fairfield City Council.

Firefighter Joseph Buccheit was one of eight candidates who filed petitions for four council seats by Wednesday's filing deadline for the Nov. 2 general election.

Fairfield Law Director John Clemmons said candidates must meet qualifications for office at the time they file petitions. One qualification is that a councilman not be an employee of the city.

Mr. Buccheit disagrees with Mr. Clemmons' opinion and said he would have to choose between holding office and keeping his part-time job only if he is elected in November, not now.

“I've gotten an opinion from the Ohio Attorney General's Office that says it would only be a conflict of interest if I am elected,” Mr. Buccheit said Thursday. “I will resign if I am elected.”

Mr. Buccheit faces former Councilman Jeff Holtegel and newcomer Martin Judd in his bid for second-ward councilman. Incumbent Councilman Don Hassler is prohibited from seeking re-election by a 1997 charter amendment that limits council members to serving two consecutive four-year terms.

First-ward voters also will elect a new representative. Incumbent Howard Dirksen, too, cannot run again because of term limits.

Newcomers Jon Saylor, of Barkley Court, and Mike Snyder, of Resor Road, are seeking Mr. Dirksen's seat.

In the fourth ward, former Councilman Terry Senger is challenging incumbent Steven Miller. Mr. Senger lost to Mr. Miller two years ago by 10 votes. Mr. Senger had served on council since 1994.

In the third ward, Councilman Ron D'Epiafanio is unopposed in his re-election bid.

Two candidates also filed to run for municipal judge.

Judge Joyce Campbell, who was appointed to the position after Keith Spaeth moved to Butler County Common Pleas Court, will face Mark Conese. Mr. Conese served 12 years as a judge in Butler County, losing his re-election bid as a domestic relations judge last year.

Four years ago, Mr. Conese ran unsuccessfully for municipal judge against former Judge Larry Deis, who died several months after winning re-election.

"I've always wanted to serve the people of Fairfield. It's my hometown,” said Mr. Conese.
