Shooting suspect, 17, bound over as adult

BY TERRY FLYNN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NEWPORT — A 17-year-old boy accused in the July 21 shooting death of Anthony “Pete” Greene was bound over to adult court Thursday and faces indictment by a Campbell County grand jury.

Judge Mickey Foellger of Campbell District Court ruled the teen-ager, who is not being identified because he has not been indicted, should be tried as an adult because there was probable cause to believe he had committed murder with a firearm.

The tall, slender youth hugged his father and mother before he was led away to the Campbell County detention center, where he will be held pending a decision from the grand jury.

Newport Police Officer Thomas Murphy, the first to arrive on the scene of the shooting on Isabella Street and the officer who arrested the shooting suspect, testified Thursday he saw the teen-ager running from the scene holding a handgun.

He was chased by a witness who caught the youth and disarmed him.

Officer Murphy said witnesses said Mr. Greene, 18, a recent graduate of Newport High School where he was the basketball team's most valuable player, was trying to protect a friend when he was killed.

The suspect reportedly fired a shot at Mr. Greene's friend at the conclusion of an argument, and when Mr. Greene grabbed him and attempted to get him to drop the gun, the youth shot Mr. Greene in the chest.

Bail was set for the teen-ager at $100,000. Judge Foellger said a high bond was called for because “it is in the best interest of the community and the defendant that he be held in custody.”

Members of the Greene family did not attend the hearing.
