Midland Braves win national title
The Midland Braves won the Dizzy Dean World Series by defeating Carroll Co. (Md.) 12-6 in the championship game.
Adam Grissom (Hamilton) and Chuck Moore (McNicholas) were named to the all-tournament team. Moore, who tied a Dizzy Dean World Series record with three home runs, was named MVP.
Sycamore swimmer eighth at nationals
Sycamore High School senior Dan Ketchum finished eighth in the 800-meter freestyle Friday at the Phillips 66 National Swimming Championships at the University of Minnesota.
Ketchum clocked in at 8:12.48, well off the winning 7:59.41 of Ryk Neethling. Neethling, a South African, technically was not eligible to win the U.S. title. Chad Carvin of Laguna Hills, Calif., was second in 8:00.53.
Stanford sophomore and St.Xavier graduate Reid Gustin also competed in the 800 but did not make the championship finals.
Riverhawks lose in shootout
The Cincinnati Riverhawks suffered a 3-2 shootout loss to the Tennessee Rhythm Friday night.
Tennessee scored two first-half goals and Cincinnati answered with two goals in the second half. But they were shut out in the shootout.
