Jury in child's death split on some charges

The Cincinnati Enquirer

The jury in Belanda Moore's murder trial told a judge Tuesday it had reached agreement on two of the charges but was deadlocked on the other three.

Judge Robert Kraft ordered the jurors to return to Hamilton County Common Pleas Court today to resume deliberations.

The jurors did not indicate which charges they had agreed on and or what verdicts they had reached.

Ms. Moore, 29, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault, murder and two counts of child endangering. She is accused of beating to death her daughter, Jasmine, 7, while punishing her Feb. 12 for misbehaving at school.

Prosecutors say she beat the girl with a rolled belt and “stomped” on her stomach several times. A coroner testified that Jasmine died the next day from a lacerated liver.

It is possible for a jury to convict or acquit a defendant on some charges while failing to reach agreement on others.

If that occurs, the judge could declare a mistrial on the remaining charges and allow prosecutors to seek a conviction on those at another trial.
