Attempt to aid dog nets $100 ticket

SHALERSVILLE, Ohio Mark Federau says he was just trying to be helpful. But authorities say he created a dangerous situation when he got out of his car and tried to rescue a dog running loose on the Ohio Turnpike.
And for that, Mr. Federau ended up in court Wednesday, where he pleaded innocent to a charge of illegally walking on the turnpike.
Mr. Federau, 35, of Parma, and a friend, Linda Vanesky, of Brunswick, He tried to chase the dog off the road and into nearby woods.
Then the highway patrol arrived. A trooper wrote Mr. Federau a $100 ticket, and made the couple drive away and leave the dog behind.
Lt. Carney Matheny, head of the patrol's Hiram post, said the animal warden was called, and the dog escaped into the woods.
Mr. Federau said he will go to jail before paying the fine.
