Clermont seeks bids on projects

Road extension is opened

BY TOM O'NEILL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

BATAVIA — An expanded airport taxiway, major sewer-line improvements along Ohio 131 and the privatization of Clermont's water district all took small steps toward completion Wednesday.

Between sessions, county commissioners convened at a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the much-anticipated opening of the Bach Buxton Road extension, which connects Ohio 125 and Ohio 32.

The Bach Buxton project, which cost $3.2 million, will serve the industrial park area in the Clough Pike industrial corridor. It also will accommodate through-traffic that now uses Interstate 275 or small local roads such as Glen Este-Withamsville Road in Union Township, causing congestion.

        On Wednesday, the board approved:

Taking bids from private companies to operate and maintain the county's water treatment, wastewater collection and distribution, and customer billing services.

Commissioners have sought to improve services and lower costs through managed competition in numerous areas now provided by the county. A 1994 wastewater study revealed the need for major capital improvements.

In March, the county received letters of interest from nine potential vendors.

A contract with Brandstetter Carroll Inc. to provide engineering services for a taxiway extension at the Clermont County Airport.

The plan involves widening an existing paved surface to full taxiway width. The airport's parallel taxiway requires most aircraft to cross the runway at two busy locations. This has slowed traffic.

In August 1998, commissioners requested a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation, but it was rejected.

State Rep. Rose Vesper, R-New Richmond, then included $100,000 for the project, to be reimbursed to the state. The Brandstetter contract is for a maximum of $6,500. The deadline is Oct. 11. The entire project is for $121,490.

A recommendation by County Engineer Carl Hartman to proceed with a major sewer line replacement project along Ohio 131 in Miami Township. The new line will stretch 5,434 feet from Wolfpen Pleasant Hill Road to an existing sewer along Pleasant View Drive.
