Transit center final designs to be unveiled

        The riverfront transit center being planned just south of Fort Washington Way will have sleek glass arches over elevators that lead people down a level to catch a bus. Those and other computer-generated final designs of the two-tiered Second Street, another piece of Cincinnati's massive riverfront reconstruction, will be unveiled at the City of Cincinnati-Hamilton County Riverfront Steering Committee today.

        “The trick has been to come up with something that works well, looks good and is compatible with the whole design of the Fort Washington Way project,” said Tim Reynolds, strategic planning director for the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA).

        The $26.5 million transit center will accommodate cars and, potentially, electric-powered light rail on the top of Second Street. Buses and po tentially diesel-powered commuter rail could run on the lower level. The new Second Street will be built directly south of the reconstructed Fort Washington Way.

        The top level of Second Street is scheduled to open in August 2000 when the new Paul Brown Stadium opens. The lower half of Second Street should open in 2001. Buses that now line up at Cinergy Field will line up there. Buses will lose the plaza at Cinergy Field when it's torn down to make room for the new Reds ballpark.
