Police charged Ricardo Meadows, 20, of Madisonville on Thursday night in the death of an elderly man and the injury of three teens in a hit-and-run accident downtown Tuesday.

Mr. Meadows was at large late Thursday. He is charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident.

The accident outside the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Sixth Street led to the death of Thomas Nicholas “Nick” Barbas, 75. Cincinnati Police Sgt. Rudy Gruenke said accident witnesses identified Mr. Meadows as the driver Thursday from a photo police had taken after a prior arrest.

On Wednesday, a tip led police to a gray 1995 Chevrolet Celebrity parked on Kremer Road in English Woods, and police traced it to its owner, Mr. Meadows, from the temporary license plate.

Mr. Barbas died Wednesday from head injuries. He was a 15-year resident of the Drop-Inn Center, a homeless shelter in Over-the-Rhine.

Pat Clifford, center director, said Mr. Barbas was a quiet man who read every day in the shelter's dining room.

Crash victim Sheila Mayborg, 15, of Sayler Park was in fair condition Thursday at Children's Hospital. The other teens were treated and released.

Police are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of Mr. Meadows to call Crime Stoppers at 352-3040 or Cincinnati Police at 352-2514. Callers may remain anonymous.
