New contract on Cincinnati State agenda

Trustees at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College on Tuesday are expected to approve a three-year contract for faculty that would include 4.5 percent annual pay raises.
The college's American Association of University Professors chapter represents about 170 full-time professors; part-time professors aren't represented. Chapter members already have ratified the contract proposal, which also includes increased health-insurance premiums.
The professors' contract will expire Sept. 6. Classes for Cincinnati State's early fall term begin Sept. 7.
The Clifton school enrolls about 6,500 students.
Initiatives to increase operating efficiency — such as streamlining administrative functions and trimming travel expenses — have enabled the school to offer faculty pay raises while still holding the line on tuition, spokesman Bruce Stoecklin said.
Growing state support also helps, Mr. Stoecklin added.
State lawmakers boosted support to Cincinnati State 14 percent this year and another 11 percent the following year under the education budget passed this summer, Mr. Stoecklin said. State funding accounts for about half Cincinnati State's budget.
Trustees agreed in June not to increase tuition for the third year in a row. That decision came as many state universities in Ohio and Kentucky set budgets that boosted tuition by 4 percent to 6 percent.
