Church seeks OK for home for unwed moms

MONROE It's been more than a year since Solid Rock Church announced plans to build a home for pregnant unwed teen-agers.
Church officials hope a hearing today in Butler County Common Pleas Court will allow work to begin on the estimated $1 million home for 30 teens.
These young girls are the ones paying the price for the delay, said Ron Carter, church financial administrator. It's disappointing that we're not already operating. There are many girls that could already have been ministered to, given proper training.
In January, the church's proposal to build the home under its 1985 conditional-use permit, which means no zone change would be required, was denied. The Monroe Board of Zoning Appeals upheld the ruling.
Officials of the nondenominational church on Union Road appealed to the court to overturn that ruling.
The nonprofit home is a dream of Darlene Bishop, wife of Pastor Lawrence Bishop. It would accept girls from all over the country, help them keep their babies and teach them to be self-sufficient.
The church initially told the city of its plans in May 1998. In July 1998, city council postponed its vote on the proposed zone change after church neighbors Jay and Helen Frick, accompanied by their attorney Peter Koenig, objected. The Fricks, who own Traders World flea market and Cincinnati Zoysia Inc., say the home would harm the marketing of their 120-acre property.
