Another book shows Shuttlesworth work
BY MARK CURNUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer
L.D. Ervin's new book about the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Step by Step (Turner Publishing; $21.95), is short on depth but long on devotion.
Mr. Ervin, 50, a U.S. Postal Service inspector who lives in Fairfield, visited Birmingham, Ala., for the first time in 1995 and was enthralled by meeting the Rev. Shuttlesworth.
By chance, he was seated next to the Rev. Shuttlesworth's former secretary, Lola Hendricks, on the flight from Birmingham. Mr. Ervin told her he wanted to write a book about the Rev. Shuttlesworth's heroism in the name of civil rights during the 1950s and '60s. She laughed and told Mr. Ervin she'd heard that comment before.
The Rev. Shuttlesworth, pastor of Greater New Light Baptist Church in North Avondale, agreed to a series of interviews with Mr. Ervin; the two men are now friends. Ms. Hendricks provided information, too. Mr. Ervin researched newspaper archives.
The book is 125 pages and contains historical photographs from the Birmingham News and the Rev. Shuttlesworth's personal collection. The book is a primer, accurately and lovingly told, best for children and readers interested in only the high points.
Mr. Ervin's work says as much about the staying power of the Rev. Shuttlesworth's civil rights contributions as it does about times in which they occurred.
