Blood shortage eases - for now
More than 2,600 people responded to Hoxworth Blood Center's emergency appeal for donors, which ended Monday.
The blood bank collected 2,299 units, enough to correct the shortfall that triggered the crisis. Marsha Terry, Hoxworth spokeswoman, said the center appreciates all the donors' support.
The need was most severe for type O blood. Hoxworth needed to have 1,052 units in stock. By the end of the drive, Hoxworth had 1,214 type O units on hand.
Even though the crisis is over, the need for blood remains. Hoxworth must collect an average of 300 units a day to keep up with local demand. For information about donating, call 451-0910.
