County debates cost of taking money for security

Grants totaling $138,000 from the Ohio Supreme Court will update security at four Hamilton County buildings that house courtrooms.
But county commissioners aren't sure whether they want all that money.
Commissioners debated Monday whether the X-ray machines and metal detectors requested by the county's Crisis Prevention Management Team should be installed at 230 E. Ninth St. and the south building of the Hamilton County Justice Center.
They are concerned that it will cost about $150,000 per year to staff and maintain each machine. The building at 230 E. Ninth St. houses probate and appellate courts. There are two courtrooms in the south Justice Center building.
Commissioner John Dowlin pointed out that both buildings are full of police officers during the day.
Commissioners likely will accept a $46,000 grant for domestic and juvenile courts at 800 Broadway, and a $23,000 grant for common pleas court in the county courthouse. It will be used to replace existing security equipment.
