CFM tests new jet fan blade

        CFM International, the joint venture of GE Aircraft Engines and Snecma of France, has begun full-scale testing of a new engine fan blade design to improve thrust and aerodynamic efficiency.

        The tests at Snecma's Villaroche, France, facilities are part of CFM's TECH56 program to install advanced technology on its existing engines as well as provide a base for potential new or derivative engines.

        The instrument and mechanical tests, which involve a swept, wide chord fan design, will be completed this month. Later this year, CFM will run full-sized blade release tests in Villaroche and cross-wind tests at GEAE's Peebles, Ohio, test facility.

Office in Australia boosts SDRC, Ford
        Structural Dynamics Research Corp. (SDRC) has opened an office in Australia to support deployment of Ford Motor Co.'s C3P, the automaker's global engineering design software initiative based on SDRC products.

        The new Australian office, operated by Ford and SDRC personnel, will assist Ford suppliers “down under” who adopt C3P. SDRC said it has already won about 20 contracts from Ford's Australian suppliers and expects that number to increase 500 percent over the next two years.

Perry & Derrick Co. hires consulting firm
        Perry & Derrick Co., the Norwood paint company, has retained Midwest Manufacturing Solutions, a Cincinnati manufacturing consulting firm, to improve operating efficiencies at its Norwood plant. Perry & Derrick recently acquired Harrison Brands paint lines.

Morris Technologies expands operations
        Morris Technologies Inc., an engineering services company specializing in rapid prototyping using stereolithography and laminated object manufacturing, has expanded operations at its plant at 11988 Tram Way Drive in Sharonville.

        The company, which employs 21, recently added two stereolithography machines to the two it operated previously. The machines use a laser beam to draw very thin cross-sections of a model on the surface of a photo-curable liquid resin. The hardened plastic is built into a finished part one layer at a time.

        The company's customers include aerospace, automotive, business equipment, consumer and medical goods industries.

Ex-plant manager at chamber seminar
        A former executive with Wainwright Industries Inc., a St. Louis metalworking company which won the 1994 Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, will be featured at the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce's Center for Excellence Seminar on Sept. 2. The event featuring Mike Simms, Wainwright's former plant manager, will be from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing Sciences in Bond Hill.

Sant introduces latest ProposalMaster
        Sant Corp. of Norwood, a developer of automated sales proposal software, has introduced the latest version of its ProposalMaster product. ProposalMaster 4.5 includes expanded integration with other sales automation software, new installation and editing options.

        “Users will see a tremendous increase in speed when they link to their account records,” said Vince DiGirolamo, Sant's manager of standard product development.

Japanese executive to advise trade group
        Japanese business executive Hiroyuki Makiura has been named senior trade adviser for Ohio's Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), within the Department of Development's international trade division.

        The Ohio JETRO program, associated with Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry, provides export consulting services to Ohio manufacturers. Mr. Makiura has worked for the Osaka Machinery Export Department since 1970.
