Hundreds on ballot in Hamilton County

The Cincinnati Enquirer

A total of 503 candidates have filed petitions to run for office in Hamilton County this November.

The petitions must be certified before candidates can be on the Nov. 2 ballot.

The biggest field is for Cincinnati City Council, with 20 candidates submitting petitions for nine seats by the Thursday deadline.

In addition to those who previously announced, petitions for council were filed by independents Theo Barnes, Charlie Lee Gardner and Sam Malone.

The seven incumbent Hamilton County Municipal Court judges will have no opposition. The judges run in districts.

This is a highly local election with no federal, state or countywide offices. Voters will be picking mayors, councils, township trustees and school boards.

A number of those races are uncontested. In Blue Ash, seven Republicans filed petitions for seven council seats. In Indian Hill, seven candidates filed for seven council seats.

It will be livelier elsewhere. Harrison has five candidates for mayor. Colerain and Delhi township voters will pick among four candidates for trustee. Nine candidates have filed for three school board seats in Princeton.

County voters will decide two levies, for mental retardation services and Drake Hospital. Tax issues are on the ballot in Elmwood Place, Glendale, Golf Manor, Greenhills, Newtown, Terrace Park and Colerain and Symmes townships.

In Clermont County, 139 candidates filed petitions, led by Peter J. Stasser and Victor Haddad, for a county municipal court judgeship.

There were 24 candidates for board of education seats in the county's nine school districts.

In Clermont's 14 town ships, 52 candidates filed for clerk and trustee seats with 59 candidates seeking clerk and council seats in the county's 10 municipalities.

Uncontested races include Bethel Board of Education; clerks in Miami and Wayne townships; and Batavia council.
