HAMILTON Voters in half of Butler County's cities will see larger than usual fields of candidates for municipal office.
The largest field is the race for city commission in Middletown where eight people filed petitions for three seats by Thursday's filing deadline for the Nov. 2 general election. Seven candidates filed for three seats in Oxford, including former mayor Betty Quantz. In Hamilton, voters will have a choice of 12 people seeking seven council seats.
I think we do have more candidates that usual, said Robert Mosketti, director of the Butler County Board of Elections. The year before every presidential election we always seem to get a larger field. We have a lot of issues and a lot of candidates.
In Union Township, three people filed petitions for one seat being vacated by Thomas Hayden, who decided not to seek re-election. After a four-year absence former Liberty Township trustee David Kern is seeking his old seat in a field of three candidates that includes no incumbents. Voters in New Miami and Seven Mile will see three choices each when they cast ballots for mayor.
All together 107 people filed petitions for 75 open seats in Butler County's six cities, six villages and 13 townships.
Meanwhile, 42 candidates filed petitions for 25 open seats on Butler County's nine public school districts and the Educational Services Center. Those who plan to run as write-in candidates have until Sept. 13 to file those petitions, Mr. Mosketti said.
All three candidates seeking the three open seats in the New Miami and Ross Local school districts are incumbents.
In the Lakota Schools two new people will join board members Sandy Wheatley, Jeff Jones and Joan Powell. Neither Helen Shumaker nor Donna Dolan, both long-time board members, is seeking re-election.
In one-third of the districts Edgewood, Madison and Middletown/Monroe there are twice as many candidates as open seats. Four people are vying for two open seats in Edgewood, including incumbents John Snyder and Linda R. McIntire.
In Middletown/Monroe there is only one incumbent, Katie McNeil, in a field of six candidates for three open seats. Madison incumbents Wesley Taylor and Alberta Derrough face opposition from seven challengers seeking the three open seats.
