Local player bows out in U.S. Am
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Kent senior Ben Curtis, reigning Ohio Amateur champion, defeated former two-time Ohio high school state medalist Andy Sanders (Turpin) 7 and 6 Friday to earn a spot in the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach, Calif.
Both had tied for third in the two-round stroke play qualifying at 145.
I prepared myself for a tough match with Andy Sanders, said Curtis of Delaware, Ohio, who didn't lose a hole. I know he's a great player. I grew up playing with him quite a bit.
Sanders, 20, a three-time Enquirer Prep Golfer of the Year entering his junior year at the University of Houston, was medalist at the Camargo Club sectional this month.
