Escapee from county jail to do more time

BY JANE PRENDERGAST
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — A ringleader in an escape last year from the Boone County Jail will spend a little more time behind bars for the unscheduled leave.

Kirby Peterson was sentenced Tuesday to 41 months in prison. He pleaded guilty in March to federal charges of conspiracy to escape and conspiracy to possess contraband in the jail. He and several others were involved in sawing through the jail's bars.

The sentencing leaves only one unsettled case relating to the July 1998 jail break. That is the case of Mr. Peterson's sister, Michelle, who brought the hacksaw blades to her brother during a visit.

Mr. Peterson, 26, of Dayton, Ohio, and Anthony Pike, 25, of Covington, were the only two who actually left the jail out the fourth-floor window that day. Inmates Shane Slade and Frank Brown were accused of helping the two leave.

Mr. Slade was already sentenced for his guilty plea to conspiracy to defraud the United States. U.S. District Judge Joseph Hood sentenced him to 24 months.

Mr. Brown was found not guilty in May.

Mr. Pike has been described as an “unindicted co-conspirator.” He was in jail on a parole violation at the time of the escape. Mr. Peterson was already a federal prisoner then. He was awaiting transfer to a federal facility after being sentenced for drug trafficking.

Mr. Pike and Mr. Peterson crawled through the bars and lowered themselves to the ground on sheets knotted together.

Mr. Peterson and Mr. Pike escaped in a car. Mr. Pike was captured eight hours after the escape, when he was found hiding under insulation at his sister's Covington house. Mr. Peterson was caught in Dayton after 11 weeks.
