Mostly white jury chosen for Miami U. trial

BY STEVE KEMME
The Cincinnati Enquirer

OXFORD — A panel of one black juror and seven white jurors will judge whether two black former Miami University students posted racist and anti-gay fliers on campus and broke the law in doing so.

After 11/2 days of questioning prospective jurors, Butler County Area I Court seated eight urors and two alternates late Tuesday afternoon.

Nathaniel Snow, 22, of College Hill, and Brad M. Allen, 21, of suburban Cleveland, are charged with criminal mischief and criminal trespassing. If convicted, each could face up to 90 days in jail and $750 in fines.

Miami University police said Mr. Snow's and Mr. Allen's fingerprints were found on the fliers that were posted Oct. 30 in the university's Black Center of Culture and Learning.

At the time, Mr. Snow was president of the Black Student Action Association.

The discovery of the racist fliers sparked a Nov. 10 protest on campus, at which about 100 students linked arms and stopped traffic at U.S. 27 and Ohio 73.

Mr. Allen participated in the Nov. 10 protest.

Mr. Snow and Mr. Allen withdrew from Miami on Jan. 20 when university officials confronted them with evidence against them.

From a pool of 40 prospective jurors, the court excused 11 Monday and six Tuesday before seating a jury.

Most of the prospective jurors said they had read or heard about the case. Some said they could not set aside opinions or impressions they had formed.
