Girl who wants to be vet saves 6 pups trapped in pipe

The Associated Press

LAKE STATION, Ind. — Callena Burns has a head start on her desire to be a veterinarian.

The senior at River Forest High School helped save six orphaned Dalmatian puppies over the weekend, four of whom she found wedged in a large metal pipe in the wooded area behind her yard.

“I would've given up my job to do this,” said Callena, who was almost two hours late to her job at The Gap in Southlake Mall because of the rescue. “I just had the best feeling.

Callena, 17, was getting ready to leave for work shortly after noon Saturday when her mother, Diane Burns, heard noises outside.

After seeing two of the puppies scurry under a neighbor's trailer, Callena found four pups wedged in a large metal pipe. She then crawled into the muddy pipe to scoop out the scared, dirty puppies.

The dogs' mother, a stray Dalmatian, was found dead under the neighbors' trailer. It appeared she had choked on a piece of insulation, Callena said.

Three puppies have been adopted. Two remaining will probably go to family friends or neighbors, but the third, the first one she pulled out, Callena hopes to keep.
